Lessing-Passaic Masonic Lodge #67 started in the City of Passaic,
New Jersey, about 150 years ago. The first attempt to establish a
Masonic Lodge in the city took place on January 21, 1861 when
the brethren met at the house of Alfred Speer, to discuss the
possibility of a Masonic Lodge in Passaic.
The Alfred Speer house was located along what is now Main Avenue
along the banks of the Passaic River. This was the same house that
Brother and General George Washington would sleep in when troops
were stationed along the banks of the Passaic River, therefore this
house was linked to the Revolutionary Struggle.
The first endeavor to establish a lodge failed and it was set aside until
a more favorable time. Time went by and the idea of a Masonic Lodge
in Passaic was still alive. On April 5th 1864, the committee met with
Chairman Smith at Speers Hall, the same place they had met before.
On March the 28th, 1865 the warrant of the Most Worshipful Grand
Lodge of the State of NJ was issued to Passaic Masonic Lodge
On the evening of April 25th, 1865, the secretary writes, there was
no meeting. The Brethren were invited to join the Masonic Section
of the Funeral Procession of the Late President Abraham Lincoln.
Lessing Masonic Lodge #189 was constituted April 23, 1908 and
derived its name from Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. This was the first
German only speaking lodge and did all its Masonic work in German
until the Most Worshipful Grand Master of The State of New Jersey
decreed that all work must be done in English.
On April 12th, 1989 Passaic Lodge and Lessing Lodge became one
Lodge known as Lessing-Passaic Masonic Lodge #67.
The Passaic Temple was later sold and the Lodge moved into their
new quarters at the Rutherford Temple. Our Lodge members are
actively involved in many local, national and state events.
