Driving Directions To Abbeville Masonic Lodge #192

Abbeville Lodge was chartered February 9, 1869 when the town of Abbeville was only 25 years old.
The first temple if it could be called such, or meeting place is believed to have been in a building near the railroad depot and the Old Masonic Cemetery. This building was also used as a Methodist Church, and was possibly the first Methodist church in Abbeville.
Numbered among the membership, starting in 1869 have been leading members of the community including, doctors, lawyers, judges, educators, military men, businessmen, farmers, political leaders, fishermen, merchants, builders and laborers. Each of these men were men of good will searching for light.
Most of the early membership, because they spoke English were called "Americans" (outsiders), who had come to Abbeville. Very few of the French speaking natives were interested in the Masonic Lodge. Among the exceptions were Brother Lastie Broussard, the Clerk of Court and Brother Joseph Trahan, who was a local farmer.
"It is said that Time is the greatest tester of all things. If an institution can stand the test of time and maintain their ideals and principles it must be worthwhile. Masonry first came to Abbeville in 1869. Even though membership has changed through several generations the ideals & principles have stood unchanged. The Lodge has stood the acid test of time and has been a great influence for good in the growth of our community.
The foundation of Masonry is deeply laid upon the Great Book of Life and will remain true to the end when the Great Master of all will take charge of the craft and order the working tools laid down and the craft dismissed."
The present Masonic Lodge was authorized on March 18, 1920. The cornerstone was laid September 4, 1920 with the Most Worshipful Grand Master Ira Weigram officiating that meeting.
